Omeprazole is rapidly absorbed from the gut. In dogs with normal hepatic function, serum half-life averages ~1 hour but the duration of therapeutic effect may persist for 24-72 hours or more. Practically speaking, omeprazole's effect is best appreciated after 24-48 hours of dosing. When more immediate effect is desired, famotidine (Pepcid) dosed at 0.25 mg/lb at 12 hour intervals is usually chosen. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
