Customer Question

My dog Sophie has a very dry nose and pants a lot. She eats fine and goes to the bathroom fine. What do you think her problem is?

Hi this is Dr. Hill. Let me ask a few questions about Sophie. How old is she and what breed? What is her normal diet and is she on any supplements or medications?

Customer: replied 7 months ago.
She's 10, she's a rat terrier, her diet is Beneful, some wet but mostly dry. The only thing she takes is heart worm.

Okay great. Thank you. Because she is an older girl, there are a wide variety of reasons she could be panting. To list a few: pain (associated with arthritis or a medical condition), Cushing's disease (her body makes too much steroid), cognitive dysfunction (this can cause anxiety), respiratory disease or heart disease. Panting is a very nonspecific clinical sign. It would be best to have her evaluated by your local veterinarian to see if there is a focus of discomfort. They will likely recommend bloodwork to check her liver, kidneys, bone marrow and look for evidence of an infection.
