Customer Question

DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis we have a 400 count glucose and sky high ketones and have been advised to take our Cheasapeake 9yr male to specialized vet. Could this be caused by tick borne diseases? Should he have antibiotics as well. One of the other symptoms besides lethargy and weight loss (20lbs in last month) is his peeing in house. Very unlike him. So we were thinking kidney infection?

Rudder has never been diagnosed with diabetes.

I'm sorry to hear of this, Dan. I'm not aware of any connection between diabetes mellitus and tick borne diseases. Antibiotics are considered when either bacterial urinary tract or skin infection arises secondary to diabetes and either is quite common. Weight loss and inappropriate urination is consistent with unregulated diabetes. Polydispsia (increased thirst) and polyuria (increased volume of urine) predispose to inappropriate urination as does bacterial urinary tract infection as mentioned.

Rudder is currently diabetic and severely so. It's unclear when his diabetes arose but it was prior to his lethargy and weight loss over the last month. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
