That little drop of blood in an intact male most often indicates acute prostatitis. Less commonly, my patient is passing a stone or his penis has been traumatized. Please have Smokie's vet rectally palpate Smokie's prostate. If painful, enlarged, and/or irregularly shaped, castration and an antibiotic that penetrates well into the prostate such as trimethoprim/sulfa or enroflaxacin will be recommended. If we don't castrate these dogs resolving the infection can be quite difficult necessitating many weeks of antibiotics and even then, relapse is common.
