Customer Question

Dog ate broth from steamed clams that had garlic in it. Did this last night. Weimariner at 85 pounds. Didn't know garlic would make him sick. This morning he is having trouble with bowels and nausea. Ate breakfast, drinking water and not laying around. Should I be concerned?

Garlic may cause transient gastrointestinal distress as evidenced by inappetence, vomiting and/or diarrhea but your weimaraner wasn't intoxicated by it. It takes quite a bit of garlic - an extract equivalent to 2.3 grams of whole garlic/lb of body weight every day for 7 days - for anemia to develop 9-11 days after dosing. I would dose him with an over the counter antacid such as famotidine (Pepcid) dosed at 0.25 mg/lb and repeated in 12 hours if necessary. Alternatively, omeprazole (Prilosec) dosed at 20 mg once should provide some comfort to him.
