Customer Question

I have a 78 pound 9 year old Chesapeake Bay retriever that had lump removal surgery today. She is in pain tonight and they didn't have anything for pain. She has a good size incision behind her left front leg. Is there anything I can give her for the pain over the counter?

John, you're necessarily constrained to aspirin dosed at 10 mg/lb with food and repeated in 12 hour intervals, acetaminophen dosed at 7 mg/lb thrice daily, or a narcotic you may have at home - human or canine; please let me know if you do and I'll see if I can give you a dose for it. You must avoid the toxic ibuprofen or naproxen in dogs.

Would 2 of these be ok.

She could be given 780 mg of coated aspirin or ~2.5 of those tablets twice daily with food. Please continue our conversation if you wish.
