These eye styes are typically benign in dogs. They usually originate from the edge of the eyelid. The treatment is with surgical removal. In a calm dog, it can be done with a local anesthetic or a fast acting general anesthetic. It's not typically anything that requires hospitalization. It is done as an out-patient procedure.

If you leave it alone, it may continue to grow. It's not a huge problem until it causes irritation and squinting of the eye. It's that point where removal is more than just cosmetic, but it helps with comfort and vision.
