Customer Question

My three year old bichon poodle has terrible breath. He sometimes has diarrhoea too. Is there a probiotic supplement I can give him that will help both problems?

Hello & welcome, I am Dr. B, a licensed veterinarian and I would like to help you with your wee one today.

Now provided that he doesn't have any dental issues (a common cause of oral odor), we can try a canine probiotic for him. We can use a canine specific OTC probiotic like Fortiflora or Protexin Enterogenic. Though if hi stools have been loose at times, then a probiotic/kaolin paste would be ideal. OTC options for that would include Propectalin, Canikur, Fast Balance, and Protexin Pro-Fiber. All are available OTC at vets, pet stores, and even Amazon. Finally, just further to the odor, you also consider using activated charcoal. This is over the counter as a gas relief for people and would bind odor (and gas) to again reduce this for him.

Please take care,

Dr. B.
