My dog is snorting and coughing like he has phlem but

Customer Question

my dog is snorting and coughing like he has phlem but nothing comes out. he is a small dog Papillion and over weight
JA: I'm sorry to hear that. Coughing can be worrying. The Veterinarian will know what you should do. How old is Papillion?
Customer: he is probably around 7 I have given him dimetap before when he gets snorky but my son had him out running about yesterday and he has been snorking heavily and not really responding to medicine I gave him
JA: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Papillion?
Customer: no he stays in the house most of the time except when he goes out to do his business. area where they go is fenced so there are not other animals droppings there. we have three other dogs too but they are all fine.
JA: OK. Got it. I'm sending you to a secure page on JustAnswer so you can place the $5 fully-refundable deposit now. While you're filling out that form, I'll tell the Veterinarian about your situation and then connect you two.

How long has your papillon been symptomatic as you've described, please? I would be surprised if his symptoms represented an infectious etiology because your other dogs have remained asymptomatic. A sterile bronchitis or simple hay fever would seem to make more sense.

He smirks from time to time but usually after chewing rawhide or if he hasn't drank water and has a dry throat. He was bad yesterday after my son had him outside running around which he normally never does. He has been snorting and weezing ever since. Marginally better after giving cold medicine but still much honkier than normal

I get that way after hiking in the middle of nowhere through chaparral. Let's see how an antihistamine such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl) affects him when dosed at 1-2 mg/lb every 12 hours if need be. Severely affected dogs (and people) might be given a low-dose glucocorticosteroid such as prednisone for a short time; it's not only antihistaminic but also antiinflammatory.
