Customer Question

I accidentally gave my dog 600 mg gabapentin. It was only supposed to be half the pill (300 mg). I called the animal hospital that prescribed it today and they said he would be okay, just very sleepy. I asked if I should induce vomiting and they said no. He weighs about 65-70 lbs. I'm a worry wort, will he be okay??

Rose, dosing of gabapentin usually falls into the 5-15 mg/lb range every 8 hours which would be equivalent to at least 325 - 975 mg for your 65 lb dog. He's going to be OK, worry wort. Sedation and ataxia ("drunken sailor") are probably the most likely adverse effects seen in dogs but there's a good chance that he's remain unaffected.
