Hello. Thanks for the question. Sorry for the long wait. This sounds like an anxiety issue. For the time being, I would try feeding a canned food and add some water to the food. This will help make sure he's taking in enough water to maintain his hydration. I would also speak with your vet about trying an anti-anxiety medication called Trazodone on him. This works well for behavior disorders to curb the behavior. I would guess that within a week he'll get over this. You should then be able to get him to drink normally from a bowl. It shouldn't be anything permanent. I would leave out a couple different water bowls while treating- metal, plastic and a saucer type bowl. In a typical sized maltese, I would give 25 mg 1-3 times daily, as needed. I usually go with twice daily to start.
