I have a 2 year old male shih tzu (approx. 22 lbs) who bites

Customer Question

I have a 2 year old male shih tzu (approx. 22 lbs) who bites and is aggressive when being groomed. His normal groomer passed away and I have taken him to several different one but they have not been able to groom him because he bites. I am trying another tomorrow morning. Since he has not been cut in almost 4 months, his fur is badly matted. What can I give him before I take him tomorrow to make sure he doesn’t bite and is able to be groomed. I’ve tried Benadryl before but it didn’t seem to work.

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. It would be best to reschedule his appointment. Bentley should be administered the prescription tranquilizer Acepromazine 2 hours prior to arriving at the groomer. This drug is available through his vet. There's nothing of value over the counter for your puposes. Benzodiazepines such as diazepam (Valium) or alprazolam (Xanax) might be of value but they can also disinhibit Bentley and increase aggression. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
