Customer Question

15 year old dog just fell off the bed and hit his head on a wooden blanket box. He has been foa,ing at the mouth, convulsing briefly and barking. He's whining now and is tender to the touch on his neck at the top of his spine (neck behind head). Suggestions? Please?

Hello. Thanks for the question.

I would get him to a vet as soon as you can. If he is walking in circles, tremoring and barking, then I would worry he has suffered some head trauma and brain swelling. Essentially, he has a concussion.

In dogs, we treat with something called Mannitol to bring the swelling down around the brain. I also like to use anti-inflammatory meds and pain meds to keep them comfortable. Many dogs have a complete recovery, but it can take days to weeks before they are completely back to normal. Most end up taking 2-3 days in the hospital before going home.

I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.
