Our 85 lb boxer is on phenobarb and he has become very food

Customer Question

Our 85 lb boxer is on phenobarb and he has become very food aggressive. Is there anything to suppress his appetite?

Yes, but you'll need to wean Axel off phenobarbital and on to another anticonvulsive such as levetiracetam or zonisamide. Polyphagia (increased hunger) is a known adverse effect of phenobarbital. We don't dose dogs with appetite suppressants such as dieting people might take. Most are amphetamine-based and are poorly tolerated by dogs.

I'm just following up on our conversation about Axel. How is everything going?
