Customer Question

We adopted a dog two hours ago. It just ate a 1/2 by 3/4 inch piece of a philodendron. She is 7 months old and weighs 40 lbs. Will she get sick?

Hi, I can help you with your question today.

Expert:  brisadog replied 1 year ago.

Yes, there are toxic properties in philodendron. They contain insoluble oxalates which can cause significant oral irritation and potentially vomiting.

Expert:  brisadog replied 1 year ago.

They do not cause systemic effects.

Milk products can bind the oxalates and reduce the irritation. I recommend giving some milk, ice cream or yogurt to coat her mouth and throat.

Do not offer too much or the excess dairy can also cause GI upset. For a mid-sized dog like her, I would aim for about 1/2 cup.
