Customer Question

My 9 week old puppy has been happy and active all day , ate twice, drinking water and has urinated but no poop. She hasn't tried to poop either. What gives....or hasn't?

Hello, I'm Dr. Deb and will do my best to help you today.

I'm sorry for this concern for Skylar but it sounds as if she's been too distracted to defecate. Depending on how much and what she's eaten over the last 24 hours or so, she may not have built up enough feces in her colon to stimulate her bowels.

Personally, I wouldn't be too concerned since I can pretty much guarantee that she'll produce a stool when she's ready. Constipation issues aren't commonly seen in puppies this age if this is something you were worried about; in fact, it's usually just the opposite. But when they do develop, the patient is usually straining and no feces are being produced.

Her behavior isn't consistent with this problem from what you've stated so it's not likely to be an issue for her.

I suspect she'll have a bowel movement within the next hour or so although it might take longer than this.

I hope this helps to reassure you about her.

Hello again,

I'm just following up on Skylar. I'm assuming that she's had multiple bowel movements since Saturday, correct? Deb
