Customer Question

My dog has been dx with liver issues. She is anemic, lethargic and increased thirst. She is having seizures and is very weak. I can't get her to stand up and go outside to pee. She seems disoriented and very weak. Should I worry about this, maybe diaper her until she feels better? She is on meds for the last two days.

Hello, I am Dr RB.. Yes, these symptoms indicate a medical emergency. Severe liver disease causes an accumulation of toxins (namely ammonia) in the bloodstream which leads to neurological symptoms such as seizures. Anemia can also occur due to liver not functioning to synthesize clotting factors... Her condition will likely not improve without aggressive treatment (such as intravenous fluids and anti-seizure meds.. I would take her to a 24 hours emergency hospital for treatment right away.
