Customer Question

Have a 13lbs poodle (senior pup); no vet available until Monday. Hind leg in pain can't settle down to rest. Can I give him ketorolac and if yes how much.

It's best to avoid ketorolac in domestic animals. It's adverse effect profile is worrisome. The primary issue in dogs is its gastrointestinal toxicity - in particular GI ulceration. Rimadyl is a better choice but if it's not available and you haven't administered it in 24 hours, aspirin dosed at 10 mg/lb with food twice daily is safe. Acetaminophen dosed at 7 mg/lb thrice daily is OK but isn't antiinflammatory. You must avoid both ibuprofen and naproxen which are toxic to dogs.

Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
