I believe that you're referring to lentigo - an asymptomatic condition characterized by one (lentigo) or more (lentigines) flat macules(s) or patch(es) of black. It's common in dogs with highest incidences reported in middle-aged to older dogs. It often appears in certain breeds (Chow, e.g.) as a normal occurrence.

No medical treatment is known. The prognosis is good as lentigines are benign changes and a cosmetic problem only. The only differential is melanoma but such an aggressive cancer is painful and causes significant inflammation and raised lesions.
