Only an urticarial reaction - hives/wheals - would come and go that quickly. Urticaria is a hypersensitivity reaction to envenomation, vaccines, food, drugs, insecticides, even environmental variables such as temperature and humidity. His feeling punky today suggests that the allergic reaction hasn't abated completely. I would continue to "watchful wait". These reactions usually abate within 36 hours. Think of what he could have gotten into or was treated with and let me know what you find.
