Hello & welcome, I am Dr. B, a licensed veterinarian and I would like to help you today. I do apologize that your question was not answered before. Different experts come online at various times; I just came online, read about your situation, and wanted to help.

The most likely reason for a shifting leg lameness (provided we can rule out a second traumatic event to the right leg) is when the focus of their discomfort or pain is actually involving the back or hip region. This can be seen with muscle based strains, arthritis, bone based infection, and sometimes associated with nerve or spinal issues. Less common issues we can also see this with some of our myopathies (where the immune system attacks the muscle tissue), when we have joint infections, or when there is a systemic infection affecting muscle use (ie tick borne disease). So, these would our main suspects for a situation of this nature.

All the best,

Dr. B.
