Customer Question

My 7 yr old 72 lbs English Bulldog has not had a BM for over 2 days.
Last night he tried within a 5 to 10 minutes, with a lot of effort, to do so 3 diffent times, with no success.
Will it be safe to give him one 5 mg tablet of Bisacodyl to help him soften stool?

I am sorry to hear about this concern.

Yes, you could give the biscodyl. However, if severely impacted, it really doesn't help to move feces that is already impacted. Under those circumstances, an enema is generally necessary.

The link above talks a bit about using bisacodyl in pets.

Considering the symptoms began last night, a vet visit by tomorrow may be very important to help relieve the impaction.

Afterwards, vets will sometimes prescribe a long-term medication like lactulose to be titrated to a dose to help prevent recurrence.

Good Luck
