Ask a Dog Vet and Get Answers to Your Dog Health Questions
HI this is DRB and I would be happy to help you with this. There are many reasons why your dog may do this but I will discuss some of the most common reasons. Some dogs will do this particularly in the morning because of eating around 6 pm and then not having anything on their stomach for more than 12 hours. These dogs area usually helped by either dividing up their dinner and giving some right before bed or giving these dogs a pepcid Ac daily to settle their stomach. Some dogs that are fed table food will do this because they have a low grade pancreatitis. Often times this does not get diagnosed until the dog gets really very sick. And some dogs may have other metabolic problems such as kidney disease.
For this, I usually recommend a physical exam, a CBC, chem panel, CPL test for pancreas, 4DX test , T4 and a urinalysis. This would be a aluminium data base for this type issue. If your dog is young and all these tests are normal your vet may recommend a course of an H2 blocker or other drug that settle stomach acid. But this should not be done without checking your dog out first as this diagnosis is a diagnosis of exclusion meaning you need to rule out other causes first.
I hope this helps you and please let me know if you need additional helps. Sincerely, DRB
