My 40 pound, 5 month old Labrador, ingested a 40mg Prozac

Customer Question

My 40 pound, 5 month old Labrador, ingested a 40mg Prozac pill. He is healthy and on no other meds. Do I need to take him to the vet?

No, you don't. 40 mg of fluoxetine for a 40 lb dog is a recommended dose for that drug. You might see anorexia, lethargy, gastrointestinal effects, anxiety, irritability, insominia/hyperactivity, or panting although adverse effects are more likely when this drug is administered for many weeks as a trial when addressing behavioral problems. There's no need to induce emesis or treat in any manner. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
