Hello, I an Dr RB and I am a small animal veterinarian:) You may want to change to a weight loss diet (prescription diet) to help you with this.. If you go this route, your regular Dvm can create a feeding schedule and amount.

If you can't this and/or want to stick with his current diet then you should try not to decrease caloric intake but more then 10% or so at first so changing to once daily feeding may be too drastic. I would decrease by 10% overall and then divided that amount into 2-3 daily feedings. For example, if he is eating 1 cup a day, reduce to 9/10 cup over 2-3 times a day.

I would recommend starting him on a joint supplement (such as Dasuquin or Tricox) or start him on Adequan injections early with your Dvm to help slow progression.. Exercise with leash walks daily, distance can be 1-5 miles daily and rest him along the way if he greats tired.. don't allow any running, jumping and limit stairs as much as possible!

Hopefully this advice is helpful!
