When two legs are swollen a systemic disorder is suspected. The swelling is likely to represent peripheral and dependent edema such as is seen concomitant with right-sided heart failure or hypoalbuminemia (low serum albumin level). Hypoalbuminemia can result from a poorly functioning liver that can't produce enough albumin or from albumin lost through the urine or bowels. Lymphedema is another consideration although unlikely with such a unilateral presentation of swelling. Lymphedema describes swelling from a protein-rich fluid filling the interstitial spaces often due to malignant cells that have metastasized from a primary site and are now blocking lymphatic channels.

Cotton's vet will need to perform a thorough physical exam including X-rays of Cotton's heart and lungs and diagnostics in the form of blood and urine tests. More advanced testing would be predicated upon the findings in the initial exam and diagnostics. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
