We take a history - how long has diarrhea with hematochezia (blood in the stool) been present? What does Gunner eat? Does he eat things other than his regular dog food - bones, foreign bodies? Has he been regularly wormed? Do you live in an area where gastrointestinal parasites are common in dogs?

We perform a thorough physical exam. Is there bleeding evident elsewhere in his body? What breed is Gunner? Some breeds are more likely to suffer from certain disorders.

We perform diagnostics - a fecal ova and parasite exam, blood and urine tests looking for systemic disorders that can manifest in the GI tract. We X-ray and ultrasound the abdomen.
