Customer Question

My dog had her teeth cleaned last week, and 3 extractions, gave her some soft food, then returned to hard good yesterday, 10 year old yorkie. She was vomiting yesterday a few times and appeared to not want to lay down, won't eat. Her tummy appears to be bloated and when I take her outside, she just kind of stands there, like she is in pain. Was a little shivery this am. called vet she said to give her some pepto, we did that, still lethargic and not eating....

Hello & welcome, I am Dr. B, a licensed veterinarian and I would like to help you with your wee one today.

Can she keep water down?

Are her gums pink or pale/white? Moist or sticky?

If you press on her belly, does she have any discomfort, tenderness, or tensing?

Could she have eaten something she should not have (ie bones, toys, rocks, plants, chemicals, etc)?

Any diarrhea?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Gums are normal color and moist and no vomiting today, ..No diarrhea, normal stools, tenderness and bloated, whimpering when you pick her up. Tries to stand and has been pointing her back leg straight out while a little wobbly, but not liking to move too much, panting, and seemed to not get comfortable no matter what, and wanting me to hold her last night. This AM she was a little shivery. I was at work all day yesterday, and my husband has been home with her, no toys to chomp on, rocks or plants that I am aware of either.

Thank you,

If she is tender, reluctant to put pressure on her belly, stretching, and bloated, then I do think we need to have her seen. This sounds more severe then a gastroenteritis or pancreatitis. It raises concerns of a possible gut blockage (if she did eat something non-edible, has worms, or a mass int he gut), gut compression (from a mass or enlarged organ), or even a twist. Therefore, while Pepto can help with mild GI upset, I'd be concerned that we have something more here. Therefore, it would be ideal to have her seen. Her vet can assess this and most importantly give her injectable pain relief and anti-nausea medication to settle her stomach and get her more comfortable.

Please take care,

Dr. B.
