Ask a Dog Vet and Get Answers to Your Dog Veterinary Questions
HI. Welcome to Just Answer. My name is***** and I've been a veterinarian for 15 years. I'm sorry to hear about Pinya's situation. I'm going to be honest here and say that a trip to the ER vet is going to be a very good idea at this time. With the fact that she's been vomiting, that steps up my concern. If she was just having diarrhea, that is something where there can be some simple things to try at home. Vomiting though indicates that her entire intestinal tract is upset. With one her size, she could dehydrate and get more debilitated quicker. I would absolutely recommend getting to the ER as they can evaluate her and then make a determination about what needs to be done to help her through this. There isn't much an owner can do at home for a dog that is vomiting except to pull up food and water for 4 to 6 hours to see if the stomach settles down. Let me know what questions this created.
Bloody diarrhea can be caused by general stress on the colon environment - colitis. A very common cause is a bacterial overgrowth called clostridial enteritis. An infection with a protozoal organism called giardia can cause bloody stools. A situation called hemorrhagic gastroenteritis can cause bloody stools too.
