Ask a Dog Vet and Get Answers to Your Dog Health Questions
Hello, I'm Dr. Bob. I understand your concern for your dog, but do you know the name of the medication?
Okay, thank you. How long has it been since you gave the medication?
Does he have any preexisting conditions like heart failure, and have you ever given him acepromazine before?
Thank you. Acepromazine is an extremely safe medication that has been used in veterinary medicine for many years.
The maximum recommended safe dose for dogs is 2.2 mg/kg (1 mg per pound). At 8 pounds, your chihuahua should be able to safely take 8 mg, or 1/3 of a tablet.
Panting is sometimes seen as a side effect of this medication. Unless his condition seems to be getting worse, I don't believe a trip to your veterinarian is necessary. He should be just fine. If you have any further questions, please let me know. Kind regards, ***** *****
The duration of action of acepromazine is up to 4 hours.
Yes, unless you gave it to calm him down in a storm. If the storm continues, the panting may as well. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance to you, I'll be glad to answer any further question you may have.
Warm regards, *****
You're welcome, have a great holiday!
Best regards, *****
