She almost certainly contracted infectious tracheobronchitis ("kennel cough") from your newly adopted dog. Symptoms vary - conjunctivitis and ocular discharge, rhinitis and sneezing with or without discharge, coughing, gagging, hacking, and even occasional pneumonia can be seen with this infection by Bordetella bronchiseptica +/- the parainfluenza virus. I don't treat the great majority of adult dogs because they're expected to remiss unaided within 10-14 days. Dogs that don't progressively improve, or, indeed, worsen, should be attended to by their vet and either potentiated amoxicillin or doxycycline prescribed - the antibiotics of choice for this infection.

Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.

remiss? should i just take her in? I am concerned, she is a lively little thing and she has just been so slowed down the last couple of days.... or am I just being a nervous momma?

Remiss = get better; I never argue with having a pet attended to by their vet and if you're comforted by doing so, please don't hesitate to do so. Once again, a 5 year old (an adult) is expect to remiss unaided within 10-14 days.

is there anything i can do or give her in the mean time?
Expert:  Dr. Michael Salkin replied 1 year ago.

Dosing with a teaspoon of honey as needed can suppress cough. Please avoid over the counter antitussives (cough suppressants) which either are ineffective (dextromethorphan in Robitussin DM, e.g.) and/or contain alcohol which suppresses cough by heavily sedating my patient. Please continue our conversation if you wish.

I will monitor her and get some honey and try to wait this out.....
Thank you so much for your time.

Sounds good. I can't set a follow-up in this venue and so would appreciate your returning to our conversation with an update - even after rating - at a time of your choosing.
