Ask a Dog Vet and Get Answers to Your Dog Health Questions
Welcome to Justanswer! I am Dr. Altman and happy to assist you both today! Some forms of shedding are common, when days are shortening or lengthening a dog will shed their coat more substantially but there are things you can do to minimize the process and ensure a healthy coat- Fish oil 750 mg EPA & DHA daily which can be a human formulation from the vitamin store or a pet formula as well. This can take 2-4 weeks to have full effect- A high quality organic diet with no by-products. Foods like Ole Roy, Purina tend to have a high concentration of by-products versus an organic diet that has human grade ingredients. If you do change foods please do so slowly so he doesn't get loose stools from a diet change- Using a brush that "desheds" him on a regular basis will help reduce the sheddingIf there is no change after a 2-4 week period then making sure there is not a metabolic cause of his shedding such as a low thyroid functionI hope this information makes sense but please let me know how else I can assist you both today!
