My maltese has a kidney infection. I have some doxycycline

Customer Question

My maltese has a kidney infection. I have some doxycycline on hand. Will it clear
up this infection? I given her this before 1/2 tablet once a day. She weighs about
8 lbs.

Hello, I am sorry to hear you are worried about Yummie. I am a veterinarian and will do my best to help. What strength of doxycycline do you have? How many do you have? Usually to treat kidney or bladder infections, you need enough to treat for 10 to 14 days. Doxycycline is a great antibiotic for many kinds of infections and diseases, but is not a particularly good antibiotic for bladder and kidney infections. Many bladder and kidney infections are due to "bugs" like E. Coli that are not sensitive to doxycycline. Let me know what else I can help with or answer.

The pills are 100 mg. But I have only given her 1/2 tablet once a day. I think she had ear infection is the reason I have
these.

It might help with an ear infection to give 1/2 once to twice daily. It would not be my first choice for a kidney or bladder infection, and may not help.

How is Yummie? Is there anything else I can help with or answer?

Hi Patsy,

I'm just following up on our conversation about Yummie. How is everything going?
