About an hour ago, my Greater Swiss Mountain Dog suddenly started

Customer Question

About an hour ago, my Greater Swiss Mountain Dog suddenly started licking everything in sight ina blind panic---the floor, walls, steps, the front porch & railings. Then he ran into the yard and started eating grass as fast as he could. After about 20 minutes he vomitted a huge clump of grass, then went back to eating grass frantically again. When he isn't eating gras or licking everything he is breathing rapidly and gulping as if trying not to drool. What on earth?

Hi, I'm a licensed veterinarian and I'll be happy to help.I've seen dogs do this when they become intensely nauseated, for reasons that often are unclear. My usual treatment is to give a dose of pepto-bismol liquid, 1mL per 10 pounds body weight, to help soothe and coat the stomach. I find that this works in most cases. If there's a more serious issue going on, then the issue may not be reduced, in which case, an injection of an anti-nausea medicine may be needed, so I'd then suggest a veterinary visit. In my experience, this is usually not needed.
