Customer Question

my eight year old wheaton terrier pants often and heavily; is this a symptom of any problem that I should be aware of?

Excessive panting can represent both medical and behavioral problems. It's often seen with elevated ambient temperature, exercise, anxiety, and pain. To confound the diagnosis further, it's also seen with fever, narcotic administration, glucocorticoid (prednisone, e.g.) therapy, Cushing's disease, hyperthyroidism, hypocalcemia (low calcium serum level), pheocromocytoma (an adrenal gland tumor), cardiac disease, tachyarrhythmias (fast irregular heart rates), brain disease and obesity. Is Prize exhibiting any other symptoms that might help clarify why he's panting so?
