Dr. Michael, We are planning on purchasing a Cairn Terrier

Customer Question

Dr. Michael,
We are planning on purchasing a Cairn Terrier pup from a reputed breeder. Unfortunately the puppy contracted Staph and the breeder asked us to hold off picking him up for a month till after full treatment with antibiotics and predinisone was complete.
My concern is does this puppy show signs of a dog with allergies, weakened immune system and perhaps other underlying disorders that will show up as the puppy grows to adulthood.
I would love to hear your opinion and recommendation.
Regards,
G

I need to know much more about about this "Staph", G. There are common Staphylococcal infections in pups (impetigo, e.g.) but also more serious conditions such as puppy strangles which may involve Staphylococcal infections. Neither presage either the incidence (risk) of allergies or a life-long weakened immune system, however. Can you investigate further?

I'd like to know where the Staph was seen and why prednisone was prescribed. Prednisone is generally contraindicated when treating Staph infections unless I'm treating puppy strangles which responds to the administration of prednisone alone suggesting that Staph isn't the primary reason for that skin disorder. There probably wasn't any blood work performed.
