Customer Question

My American bulldog has Venticular arrhythmia and has been prescribed mexilitene 150 mg 2 capsules every 8 hours along wit sotolol 40 mg every 12 hours. After giving her the mexilitene she slept but urinated on herself n as she walked urine came out. She became very anxious and couldn't calm down. She doesn't do well with Tramsdol. We are waiting for the doctor to prescribe diazepam. What are the side effects of mexilitene?

Aloha! You're speaking to Dr. Michael Salkin
The most likely adverse effect noted in dogs is GI distress - vomiting, usually. Giving with meals may alleviate GI effects. Potentially (reported in humans): central nervous system effects (trembling, unsteadiness, dizziness, depression), shortness of breath, premature ventricular contractions and chest pain could occur. Rarely, seizures, and blood cell changes have been reported in humans. It sounds as if Bullwinkle thinks she's a human. I like the idea of a benzodiazepine such as diazepam.
