My 45 lb border collie had a grand mal seizure Friday night.

Customer Question

My 45 lb border collie had a grand mal seizure Friday night. Lasted about 30 minutes. She has had minor ones before about every two or three months. I am looking for a natural supplement as I know the effects phenobarbital has. Does Nuroplex work?

Welcome! My name is***** am a UC Davis graduate, and currently, a Medical Director of a veterinary hospital.
I am sorry to hear about this concern. With a grand mal seizure, I would not trust a single supplement on the market for seizure control. The risk for breakthrough seizures and permanent damage is simply to high. No, I would not say Nuroplex is effective in my experience. Some pets have seizures very infrequently, which may give the false impression of effectiveness.
If you are worried about the side-effects of phenobarbital, although it is one of the most respected drugs for seizure control, many vets are starting pets with potassium bromide instead for seizure control. I would definitely review with your vet doing potassium bromide as a starting option.
Too much risk to rely on a natural alternative in my opinion. But, if you were to try a supplement, Nuroplex is quite popular.
Good Luck!
