Customer Question

My dog started sneezing yesterday ..what can I do?
There is no discharge but she recently had back surgery and has been recuperating at home. She was in the kennel last week for 4 days.

Hello. My name is***** and I would like to assist with your question today. Typically when there is no discharge present, the underlying cause is allergic or viral. Most viral causes clear on their own in a 10 day period. Sometimes though a secondary bacterial infection sets in which would require antibiotics.

If a bacterial component is present, there is typically discharge, often thicker and colored (like a human with a cold). This can happen from being an a kennel situation.

Of course we do not have the sneezing to affect her rehab from surgery. You can start by giving benadryl at home (human size 25 mg tablets) at a dose of approximately 1 mg per pound (you can round to the nearest half tablet). If the sneezing does not decrease within 48 hours though, I would recommend seeing a local vet for a course of an antibiotic.
