Welcome! I am Dr. Altman, a licensed veterinarian and happy to answer your questions today.
Unfortunately gabapentin does not tend to be effective in an acute situation as you describe but more for chronic purposes. For example, a dog that has a cruciate tear we might give nonsteroidals such as rimadyl or metacam or even tramadol which is in the opioid class of pain medication initially to control pain.
Gabapentin can take 7-10 days to have full effect and reduce pain.
Do you have any previously prescribed pain medication for Cooper?
What is the mg of the gabapentin and how much does Cooper weigh?
