Customer Question

We have a 6 year old male mini dachshund who is acing very strange. He has started walking backwards. He doesn't do it all the time just off and on. This has been happening for about 5 days. Today he will not get off the couch even when I call for him. He always comes running when he hears the treat jar but not today! What could possibly be wrong with my furbaby?

Hello, I'm a licensed veterinarian and I'll try to help you however I can. Walking backwards is usually associated with a problem within the central nervous system -- usually the brain or the spinal cord. These sorts of issues are difficult to identify and diagnose, without advanced testing such as an MRI of the brain, which typically means that a neurology specialist must be consulted. I have read about other issues such as Dental pain causing backwards-walking, but in any event, this little guy needs to be evaluated by a veterinarian, as this situation is not likely to be resolved with any at-home treatments or remedies.

Hi Shellie,

I'm just following up on our conversation about Gabe. How is everything going?
