Welcome! I am Dr. Altman, a licensed veterinarian and happy to answer your questions today.
Unfortunately if it is a uti there are no over the counter antibiotics to treat this
If it is simply an inflammatory process you can increase his water intake by adding water to his dry food, flavoring his water (such as pancake syrup), and add 500 mg cranberry extract to his daily regimen
But often the antibiotics are going to be needed to resolve the issue
Since he was just seen two months ago for this there is a chance your veterinarian will allow you to drop off a urine sample (fresh first morning sample or refrigerated) to minimize your cost if you explain your situation
I do this for my clients with recurrent issues so perhaps your veterinarian does the same thing...
Thank you - calling and asking if they could do that was my next step. My wife suggested this - maybe there was something we could do now at home.
The increased water intake flushes out the bladder and reduces the attachment of the bacteria to the wall of the bladder
The acidity of the cranberry reduces the bacteria environment so they cannot thrive
Sorry, I wish there was a home remedy for a uti but if it is in fact bacterial in origin the only treatment is antibiotics...
OK, thank you, XXXXX XXXXX
It will give Maxwell some relief for 24-48 hours
You are welcome
