My dog ate Miracle Gro. What should I do. I called my vet they don't seem to know

Dr. Altman :

Welcome! I am Dr. Altman, a licensed veterinarian and happy to answer your questions today.

Dr. Altman :

How long ago did Wrangler ingest the miracle gro? How much did he ingest and how much does he weigh please?

Customer:

He ate it about fifteen minutes ago. I do not know how much, possible a cup, he weighs about 80 lbs.

Dr. Altman :

And what variety of miracle gro there are quite a few

Customer:

its all purpose water soluble plant food 15 30 15

Dr. Altman :

OK please give me one minute

Customer:

ok

Dr. Altman :

In the meanwhile, do you have any 3% hydrogen peroxide

Customer:

No, but I can get some.

Dr. Altman :

According to the msds page:

General Information Very low toxicity for humans and animals
Ingestion: Health injuries are not known or expected under normal use

Dr. Altman :

In previous conversations on justanswers who have contacted the company they listed that they do not expect to see any issues with pets except possible gi upset

Customer:

Okay. I just texted my husband to pick up some hydrogen peroxide, what should i do with it.

Customer:

I did see that same info on their website.

Dr. Altman :

That was in case we needed it, I do not think that would be necessary at this time

Dr. Altman :

In a dog Wrangler's size eating about a cup you should not see any side effects

Dr. Altman :

But do monitor for any vomiting, swollen belly, diarrhea, discomfort

Customer:

Sorry for bad grammer and punctuation, I'm a little shook up.

Dr. Altman :

I understand

Dr. Altman :

I have had my dogs do things like this before as well, always a good idea to have the peroxide at home for trouble makers in the future though

Customer:

Thank you so much. I will definitely keep an eye on him. How do I use the peroxide for future reference?

Dr. Altman :

Tonight feed him only half of his normal diet and perhaps a cup of cooked white rice to settle his stomach

Dr. Altman :

1 tsp per 10 pounds

Dr. Altman :

So for his size that would be 2 tbsp & 2 tsp

Customer:

Ok. He eats anything so it won't be a problem.

Dr. Altman :

Walking him around to mix the peroxide in the stomach and if no vomiting then repeat once in 15 minues

Dr. Altman :

Only good for the first hour after ingestion

Dr. Altman :

But because the acidity of the miracle gro it is not advised to induce vomiting and he should be fine from this

Customer:

Hubby will be home in about half an hour. We live in Alaska... takes a while to get anywhere

Dr. Altman :

I definitely would still monitor him tonight though

Customer:

Ok, we will settle back and keep an eye on him, will not induce vomiting

Dr. Altman :

Great

Dr. Altman :

Can I assist with any additional questions today?

Customer:

Thank you!

Dr. Altman :

You are welcome

Customer:

I think I'm good for now.

Dr. Altman :

OK good luck!

Customer:

Thanks.... have a good evening

Dr. Altman :

You as well
