my dog ate half a chocolate marzipan cookie 1 hour and a half ago. I gave her about 2 tea spoons of 3% hydrogen peroxide over a 20 minute period but no throwing up. she is just under 10 pounds brussels griffon. she is alert and seemingly fine.is there a time limit where symptoms may start to show if something is wrong. is the peroxide in her stomach harmful without coming up?

Optional Information:
Type of Animal: Brussels griffon

Aloha! You're speaking to Dr. Michael Salkin
Please don't worry. Bean would have had to have eaten 10 ounces of milk chocolate or 3.5 ounces of dark chocolate to become intoxicated by theobromine - the chemical in chocolate that we worry about. You needn't try to induce emesis again. The worst you might see is a bit of gastrointestinal upset from eating an unfamiliar food.

Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.

phew. thank you so much. she's so little so i worry if she eats something especially chocolate. i was also worried when she wouldnt throw up some years ago she did throw up using the peroxide. Is this a stupid thing to do in emergencies to induce if i panic and and my vet is closed? can this damage any parts of her inner workings. how much is 10 ounces and 3.5 in blocks of a bar? thanks so much. thats it i'll relax now.

Peroxide is simply an irritant to the stomach lining. It's given at a dose of 1 teaspoon (5ml)/5lbs of body weight carefully with a poultry baster placed between the cheek teeth and cheek. You were prudent to administer it and didn't harm Bean by doing so.

You'll need to check the weight of the chocolate bar you're concerned about. One ounce is approximately 30g (so 10 ounces is 300mg and 3.5 ounces is 105mg) but most of a chocolate bar is sugar - not chocolate. There's actually very little chocolate in 1/2 of a chocolate marzipan cookie.

Take a deep breath. Bean will be fine.
