My foster dogs eyes get really goopy every few days. Sometimes it's bright green, other days it's white/clear. I have been giving him benedryl and wiping eyes with wash cloth and using eye drops. Do you think he has conjunctivitis?
Hi, I am Dr. Jeff. I will try to help you. Please feel free to follow up if any more information is needed. Allergies are a concern and your approach with benedryl is a good step. I would make sure that you are using the appropriate dose which would be 1 mg/lb twice daily. You are also taking the appropriate step by flushing the eyes. Conjunctivitis is possible but so are other issues such as a mild upper respiratory infection, clogged tear ducts, dry eye, corneal scratch/ulcer, etc. So, I would continue with the therapy you have started ensuring you are using the correct benedryl dose. If things are not improving, then a vet visit is warranted. Tear tests, eye stain, etc are all possible tests. Some treatments may include oral antibiotics, different eye meds (antibiotics, steroid, cyclosporine, etc), etc. Other that flushing the eyes and the oral benedryl, there is no other home option I can provide at this time. I hope this helps and gives you direction.ThanksDr. Jeff
