My dog hurt his tail, he wont let you touch it and he cant

Customer Question

My dog hurt his tail, he won't let you touch it and he can't lift it. When he tries to walk he sits right back down because his tail wags constantly. He has a long tail and it appears to be hurting in the upper part. He isn't crying but seems to be hurting. I don't want to take him to the emergency hospital and can't get him to the vet until wed. I don't know if its broke but worried it is. I was told there is nothing that can be done, its like a broken toe and just has to heal. T I think this afternoon is when it happened, he was playing earlier. Is there anything I can do to make him feel better? Should I try and splint it somehow? Can I give him anything for pain?

Welcome to JustAnswer! I am a licensed veterinarian and specialist and will do my best to assist you today!

Most commonly for a broken tail this is left to heal - provided there is no change in urination or defecation.

This is typically treated with rest and pain medication - but not splinted.

Weight: normal;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;">Regarding pain management in dogs, common options to consider include:

1) NSAIDS (like ibuprofen - BUT SAFE FOR DOGS!)
- Rimadyl (LINK HERE)
- Deramaxx (LINK HERE)

2) Tramadol (an opiod like morphine used in dogs) - LINK HERE

With that said, while most veterinarians do not like the use of human over the counter pain medications such as Tylenol (acetaminophen) or human ibuprofen, although some have good experience with aspirin (LINK HERE)

A typical aspirin dose is 5 to 10 mg per pound (10 to 20 mg/kg) twice daily for dogs. However, it is important to note that aspirin should never be given if already on NSAIDS as above, or steroids such as prednisone.

When using NSAIDS or aspirin, often Pepcid A/C (famotidine) LINK HERE is used as well to reduce the risk of stomach upset.

The typical dose administered is 0.25 to 0.5 mg per pound (0.5 to 1.0 mg/kg) every 12 to 24 hours
