Hi, my lab/hound mix has developed a skin rash. Rash appeared first after a visit to upstate New York where she was running through the woods. She didn't have Frontline on that visit. She's been to the same location before with no issues. There are bumps on her chest, stomach and inside of her legs. She's not constantly scratching, but some of the scratching has made some of them scab-by. She just had another visit upstate with Frontline, but the rash got worse. Her food hasn't changed over the last few weeks.
Optional Information: Type of Animal: black lab/hound Gender: Female Age: approx 2 yrs Name of Dog: Daisy Already Tried: Let it run it's course. We first thought it was some sort of insect bite, but bumps/rash doesn't go away.
Welcome to JustAnswer! I am a licensed veterinarian and specialist and will do my best to assist you today!Weight: normal;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;">Based on your description, 3 thoughts come to mind:1) Allergies / Contact hypersensitivity2) FOLLICULITIS - an inflammation of the hair follicle. 3) PYODERMA - a bacterial skin infection If there is just a local area - you may be able to treat it by washing the area with an antibacterial product - an example would be chlorhexidine scrub (which you can get over the counter at pharmacy - (EXAMPLE HERE)Antihistamines such as Benadryl (LINK HERE) can als be considered - dosed in dogs at 1mg per 1 pound of body weight every 8-12 hours, meaning a 25 pound dog would get 25mg every 8-12 hoursThere are times when topical products are not enough, and systemic antibiotics are considered. Common antibiotics for these cases include:- Clavamox (LINK HERE)- Cephalexin (LINK HERE)Hope that helps and answers all your questions! Before rating - Please REPLY at any time if more information is needed and I would be glad to reply back and help!Positive RATING (EXCITED FACE or 5 STARS) and bonus is appreciated as this is the way the professional receives credit for their time. Thank you for your good pictures - with those in mind, a pyoderma would be high on the list and due to the diffuse nature, antibiotics likely needed. Before rating - Please REPLY at any time if more information is needed and I would be glad to reply back and help!Positive RATING (EXCITED FACE or 5 STARS) and bonus is appreciated as this is the way the professional receives credit for their time. Is topical application still relevant with Pyoderma or just antibiotics?
What would the cause be? It seems to have started with in a particular different environment or could that just be coincidence?
With this degree of spread - typically antibiotics are needed. The environment may have started it - but it can happen regardless. Before rating - Please REPLY at any time if more information is needed and I would be glad to reply back and help!Positive RATING (EXCITED FACE or 5 STARS) and bonus is appreciated as this is the way the professional receives credit for their time. Is this something I need to made an emergency appointment with my vet or emergency vet clinic tonight/tomorrow, or could this wait till Monday/Tuesday when I can take her to her regular vet?
This is typically not an emergency. It can most often be seen as a regular appointment with your primary care veterinarian. Before rating - Please REPLY at any time if more information is needed and I would be glad to reply back and help!Positive RATING (EXCITED FACE or 5 STARS) and bonus is appreciated as this is the way the professional receives credit for their time.
