DR. Zoe :

Hello, I am Dr. Zoe, a licensed veterinarian here to help. The dose of cyanocobalamin (B12) is 25 mcg/kg once a week for 4 to 6 weeks (I usually do 6) and then recheck the B12 level. If the level is back to normal then we do once monthly long-term. This will only help if there is initial documentation (lab work) that the cobalamin level is low.

DR. Zoe :

So, the dose you would give depends on how much your dog weighs. I need your dog's Weight. For example, if your dog weighs 25 pounds, then you would be giving 284mcg. The medication you indicated is 1000mcg/ml, which means you would divide 284 by 1000 which is 0.28ml. If you need specific help calculating this for Nikko's weight then let me know. As far as what I use to administer it would be a tuberculin (1cc) syringe with a 25G or 23G needle. This medication does not burn (now in contrast Vitamin B-complex which is different does burn).

Nikko is 70 lb

70 lbs= 18.8kg
Nikko's dose: 18.8kg x 25 mcg = 795mcg
Total amount to administer then is 795mcg/1000mcg per ml = 0.8 ml (rounded up...too tough to measure 0.795ml)

So, you would give 0.8 ml of cyanocobalamin (vitamin B12 which is usually a pink injectable...not B-complex) once a week for 4 to 6 weeks (as directed by your vet). And then recheck the cobalamin level.

Let me know if any of my calculations do not make sense

Thank you for your help. I will recheck him and his 1/2 sister after the 6 shots to see if they are retaining the b12. I'll draw and ship to Texas a & m gastro LAb. Thanks for your help.
