My 12 year-old, 11 lb pomeranian gets 3 units of Humulin N, twice per day. This morning, she accidentally got the food for my 16 lb dog with CHF. In addition to her insulin, she received: Temaril-P, Enalapril; Torbutral; and Lasix. Should I monitor her or get her to the vet? I have to leave for work in 30 minutes... she took the meds 30 minute ago... no side effects so far.
Optional Information: Type of Animal: Pom Age: 12 Already Tried: Monitoring
Welcome to JustAnswer! I am a licensed veterinarian and specialist and will do my best to assist you today! Can you please list the milligrams dosing for each of the medications she accidentally had access to?-
Ten-p milligrams not shown, lasix-12.5 mg, torbutral-5 mg, enalapril-10 mg
Thank you for your reply.Based on your dog's body Weight, if healthy otherwise aside from the insulin, mild sedation and an increased thirst / urination may be seen for 6-12 hours. This is not toxic otherwise.Knowing this is a diabetic and the doses are low (based on body weight), inducing vomiting, especially this long after would not be common due to the risk of hypoglycemia. While free water should be available at all time and there should be monitoring for sedation over the next 6 (up to 12) hours, serious toxicity or severe illness would NOT be expected at these accidental doses.I hope this helps! She has not yet had her insulin regulated... she suffered from pancreatitus four weeks ago, and that is when the diabetes was discovered. They said her blood sugar is still extremely high as of this past Monday, and I had to increase her insulin from 2 units per day to 3 units per day. Will the currently unstable insulin create additional cause for concern?
No - that would not increase any risk here.I hope this helps!
