Customer Question

My 12 year old cairn terrier was recently diagnosed with nose cancer a couple of weeks ago after she started bleeding from the nose. We opt not to undergo radiation or chemo. We started her on a product called ES Clear. I was also reading about people offering milk thistle to their sick dogs. Would milk thistle help?

Rebeccavet : Hi JACustomer,
Rebeccavet : I am sorry to hear about your dog.
Rebeccavet : My name is XXXXXXX XXX I am a licensed veterinarian.
Rebeccavet : I use mik thistle a lot in dogs, but it is specifically for liver disease. If her liver enzymes are elevated, if she has hepatitis or liver cancer, it can be very helpful. But I have only heard or read of using it for liver diseases, not cancer anywhere else in the body.
Rebeccavet : It is safe to use in dogs and would be liver protective if you were going to do chemo, but I really will not help a nose tumor
Rebeccavet : I would use the
Rebeccavet : I would use the Chinese herb Yunnan Baiyo. It helps prevent excess bleeding, and may help control nosebleeds.
Customer :

Where can I get that? In a health food/vitamin supplement store like VitaminWorld?

Rebeccavet : You might be able to if they carry Chinese herbs. You can get it online too, at places like ChineseHerbsDirect.com
Rebeccavet : We carry it at our clinic so you could ask your vet if they have it.
Rebeccavet : Can I answer anything else?
Rebeccavet : I can understand your decision about not doiing chemo or radiation in a dog as old as yours.
Customer :

Ok, I can ask my regular vet. We are trying to stimulate her appetit. She absolutely refuses to eat any food on her own, after her rhinotomy about 2 weeks ago, when a biopsy was done of the tumor. She drinks water on her own and mostly sleep. Her condition went from fairly normal to downhill so quickly in a matter of a month. We've been feeding her pureed fresh refrigerated dog food along with eggs & Nzymes supplement in a syringe, along with antibiotics supplied after her surgery. She is able to do bowel movements every other day. I am hoping that the product ES Clear will make her more comfortable and more receptive to eating again.

Rebeccavet : You could try the appetite stimulant mirtazapine. And I would have her on pain medication. Cancer can be painful.
Rebeccavet : I would be using tramadol, and maybe an anti inflammatory medication.
Customer :

Yes, she also is taking a non steroid anti inflammatory called metacam. I don't quite recall the name since the bottle is at home.

Rebeccavet : Good, but I would also be using a medication for pain like tramadol.
Rebeccavet : And ask about mirtazapine as an appetite stimulant.
Customer :

I will ask my regular vet about that. Thank you for your time.
